Im a student so my primary use will be for typing notes, making essays, opening pdf and word documents and all that good stuff. I was wondering how the app (I think its called pages or iwork) compares to Microsoft Office. I have a couple of mates who also have macbook and some swear by Microsoft Office, some use OneNote, some use the built in mac app and its very confusing for me. Help me out guys:) 48 comments share save hide report 71 Upvoted This thread is archived New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast Sort by best. I wouldnt use it for anything hugely important, and remember to save frequently Continue this thread level 2 2 points 5 years ago Works well until your start loading a lot of docs at once with dynamic elements in them. But yeah it hardly crashes unless youre doing a lot of stuff at once in it. But I like the new 2016 version:) Major step up from the POS 2011 office we had. Continue this thread level 1 10 points 5 years ago If youre gonna do it. Dont even waste your time with the older MS Office for Mac 2011 crapfest. Youll always have that document that you need to work one with other students using MS Office, its always better have MS Office handy to edit it without compromising any advanced feature it might have. I use office because the rest of my department does, but for everything else, I use Apple iWork. It should be Microsoft Student Options under Office 365, IIRC. For my needs they work fine and it was years ago I had to use MS Office (or OpenOffice). Why Is Office So Good Update It LaterCheck on this before you drop money on it If you do choose to buy MS Office, wait a bit; I think MS will update it later this year. It can save to MS Office formats, so unless you need the more advanced excel functions and features, you may not even need to buy Office. ![]() Generally Office for Mac isnt that great, though the 2016 Preview looks nice. If you just want to create documents and presentations, you can make much nicer-looking ones in Pages and Keynote. You can save Pages files in a compatible format (cant remember if its doc, docx or just rtf) but you never know if the formatting will be exactly correct or not. That said, you can get by with plenty of freecheap alternatives. See if you can get a discounted Office 365 subscription through your school and youll be covered when the upgrade comes along. I purchased one through my school for 80 and its good for four years. I use Pages a lot, but when Im doing collaborative projects that require editing documents and sending them to other people I dont like using it because the formatting changes.
